----- from Dave Roome ----- Hi, I have Just started to use Templot and I am finding it hard to work out how to make an A7 size turnout which my layout will be made up of. Are there any tips as to where I'm going wrong? Thanks Dave Roome |

Are there any tips as to where I'm going wrong?Hi Dave, Although an A-7 turnout is a "natural" size (i.e. the switch radius and turnout radius are equal), it's not a good idea to build an entire layout using them. The short A-size switches are not used in running lines, they are found only in yards and sidings. The sharp 1:24 switch deflection means that they can hardly be curved at all without running into severe radius problems. It is generally better to use B-7 turnouts instead, which will take some curving if needed and will give you much more design flexibility. There are some notes about this at: http://www.templot.com/martweb/rea_a_or_b.htm To create an A-7 turnout, the easiest way is to start with a B-7. Do this: If you are still using Templot version 074b, click the track > quick set... menu item. Select "REA B-7" in the drop-down list, and click OK. Then click the track > switch... menu item. Click "size A semi-curved flexible switch (REA)" in the list, and then click OK. You will then have an A-7 turnout with an REA size A switch and a 1:7 regular V-crossing. If you have upgraded to Templot version 091c, that's template > new template (quick set) ... menu item and template > switch options ... menu item. They do the same things, just the menu wording has been changed slightly. regards, Martin. |
