Dear all, In the nearly 9 years since we started the Templot email group on Yahoo, we have accumulated over 13,000 messages. About 8,000 on the old Yahoo group, and another 5,000 since we moved to the present Templot Club format two years ago. That's a lot of reading! Plus hundreds of screenshots, diagrams and pictures. Although we now have a good search function for most of it, like all computer searches it works best when you know the answer before you ask the question. I've been aware for some time that what is needed is a proper alphabetical index into this resource, so that those coming to it for the first time have a chance of finding things. And me -- several times recently I have replied to a message, only to discover that I had written the same thing years ago, sometimes with diagrams, and that I could have simply posted a link. But I can't possibly go through 13,000 messages to create an index single-handed -- it would take forever. That's where you come in. I have started an embryo index with just a handful of entries, which you can try at: http://www.templot.com/forum_index The original pages from both Templot Club and the Yahoo group are embedded in the results pane, so they may take a second or two to arrive. In addition to the alphabetical Index, there is a structured expanding contents tree which you can see by clicking the Contents tab. The structure there is just an initial trial and can easily be re-arranged as necessary as the site expands. If you think this looks promising and you would like to help me extend it into something useful, this is what to do: 1. As you are browsing this Templot Club site, or the Yahoo group archives, if you find a message to which you think it would be worth having a permanent indexed link, make a note of the message number. On Yahoo the numbers are displayed on Yahoo alongside the message heading, or in the browser address bar. Here on Templot Club the message numbers can be seen in the status bar at the bottom left of your browser, by hovering the mouse over the "this message only" link at the top left of each message. The number is also shown at the bottom of club emails. 2. Post a reply to this topic, quoting the message number, and whether it applies to Templot Club web forum, or Yahoo. I can do the rest. You can of course post full links instead if you prefer, and add your indexing suggestions. Please don't start a new topic -- post everything as replies here in this one, so that I know where to find it. Many thanks for your help. Comments welcome as always. regards, Martin. |

Hi Martin I have just had a quick look at the indexing and it looks to be a positive step forward to helping find information especially if the index can be cross referenced to the various forms of terminology used ie. tandem turnouts and three way turnouts, compounds and slips etc. I find when using the search facilities I have known that the answer is there but can't remember the terminology used and have to try the various terms to find what I'm looking for. Also could the scruff video's be added. Keep up the good work. Cheers Phil |

Hi Martin I have nothing but encouragement to offer at present but thought an interesting effect I have experienced may be of modest interest. On the intro page there is a panel on the right with the three tabs. Index, Contents, and Search. When the 'Contents' tab is in it's silver mode, to bring the mouse over the 'Index' turns that tab silver. However, if I bring the mouse over the 'Search' tab instead a flickering window surround appears around the tabs panel and they too join in flickering. All else seems to work normally. Kind Regards, Donald |

Tandem turnouts are a frequent source of questions. There are some notes about the tandem turnout video in message 4150: message 4150 regards, Martin. |
