Hi again  I seem to remember someone mentioning in a email message one day about a group that had produced point crossing & switch building jigs but I can't remember who or any contact details & prices.Regards Len Cattley |

Hi Len, I think it was an individual within one of the Scalefour Area Groups, but I could be wrong. Unfortunately they have now passed on and there is currently no manufacturing of the jigs being undertaken. I think S4 and EM stores have limited supplies of the jigs. Andy |

Hi Len, There is a company in Ontario, Canada called Fast Tracks who make an excellent range of jigs, templates and other track laying tools. Unfortunately, like most North American modellers their products are either HO (1:87 on 16.5mm gauge) or O (1:48 on 1.25" gauge). Their website is http://www.handlaidtrack.com. Thanks guys, I have looked at the EM gauge web site & found they still do the jigs but at £25-£29 a pop they are a bit pricey. Am I right in thinking that Iain Rice did a book on building track (I thought I had one but can't find it) or is this wishful thinking? Regards Len |

But a better and more up to date book is 'Track Construction' by Jeff Geary and John Shaw. ISBN 0954203593 Jeff also wrote another book entitled 'Wiring the Layout'. Sadly, this is now out of print and apparently unlikely to be reprinted. So if you locate the former and see the latter, it would be worth purchasing it. Regards Brian Lewis |

I purchased my vee jig and switch blade jigs from Richard Johnson at DCC Concepts in Perth Australia for quite a reasonable cost from memory, under $50 if I recall. They have been very usefull too. Will be seeing some more action soon too I imagine. Rice's text on Finescale is useful but probably a little dated now particularly with the advent of proper closed cell foam underlays and the like, not to mention laser cut timber sleepers. I might give the other text a try too - can't read too much on any topic I say! |

Hi Martin I'm a bit confused by your review in that you inferred that it's not as good as Iain Rice's book ie: "It's well worth a space on your bookshelf, somewhere about half-way between your old Peco "Shows You How" booklets on the left, and Iain Rice's book on finescale track on the right." So in your opinion which one is the best for instructing you to build finescale track? Kind regards Len |

Without getting both books out now and doing a careful cross-check I wouldn't want to suggest which was the better. From memory, for model track construction methods there may not be much in it. Iain's book is much meatier and contains a lot more prototype information and drawings; the Trax book includes the Trax2 software on CD. When I've got more time I'll have a good look at both books again and actually answer your question instead of waffling. I imagine many members on here have both books, and their own preference. Iain also wrote a book purely about copper-clad track construction for beginners. I don't have a copy of that, so I can't say how it compares with the others. regards, Martin. |
