Having now retired and finished with the Open University, as both student and tutor, I no longer 'need' Windows, so I have followed my heart and moved over to Linux. More specifically, Ubuntu, which I like, currently version 9.04. That said, there are a couple of non-MS Windows programs I'm fond of and I looked for a way to run them under Linux. I was aware of Wine, but then discovered Crossover Linux, from CodeWeavers. Not free, but very reasonably priced and suitability can be checked with a free trial period. More at http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxlinux/ if anyone is interested. This acts as a form of overlay for Wine, so far as I can see. Certainly Wine is installed along with Crossover Linux. Installation under Ubuntu was trouble-free.

But what about Templot, you cry!

So far, no problems whatsoever. I selected the 'Install unsupported software' option, pointed Crossover at the downloaded Templot installer file, created a Crossover 'bottle' (their name for a Windows-like environment - options include 98, 2000, XP and Vista) and set it away. First time load. I ran it, got the PC ID code and asked Martin for the release code (which came very quickly - thanks, Martin), entered it and away I went. No obvious differences to using Templot under Windows. Printer setup, for both my directly-connected Canon MP610 and my networked Xerox laser was completely trouble-free.

Next step was to update to version 0.91c, which worked first time, following the same procedure in Crossover Linux.

I haven't got into the nitty-gritty of design yet, but first indications are very favourable, and all mouse actions seem to work as expected.

Colour me happy!

Hi All,

I was interested in this thread as I am considering using Linux for running some windows apps.  My understanding is that Crossover Linux is a derivative of WINE - and therefore shares the same faults. The biggest problem is that these are *not* complete Windows emulators - rather, they are a way of running popular Windows apps under Linux. Thus, several Windows calls are not implemented - an example of which I am aware is the 'GetBoundsRect' function (which can affect screen redraws), but I believe there are many others.  So the risk is that whilst an app will *run*, certain bits of it might not work as intended.

So I will be interested to know if there are any devils hiding in the detail sonewhere!

Best Regards,

Howard

Howard,

I've been using Templot for about eighteen months via Wine, with no problems, glitches, or gremlins. Escaping Windows was one of the best moves I've ever made!

Hi all,
just a note to say that Templot 091c installs without errors on Ubuntu 10.04LTS using the default Wine Libraries - so it really is just a case of running the pug setup et voila.

Cheers

Minor update - when calibrating the printer, the computer may appear to freeze. Panic ye not, it just takes a minute or so (to do some tricky sums I presume).

Cheers

Bumping this old topic.

More and more users are running Templot on a Mac and/or Linux using Crossover/Wine, so I thought it was high time I tried it for myself. :)

Today I installed Ubuntu Linux and Wine and I have been doing some tests. To get Wine to install without errors I had to use the 2-year-old Ubuntu 10.04LTS 32-bit version rather than the latest 11.10 64-bit, but no doubt that is due to my unfamiliarity with Linux.

Users have often reported that Templot all works fine under Wine. But I found it difficult to believe and assumed that some things probably don't. On the other hand I assumed that it would look visually attractive rendered in the Mac or Linux styles and graphics.

Wrong on both counts! :)

As far as I can see everything does work fine, including to my surprise the sketchboard graphics, sketchboard RTF editor, EMF metafiles, PDF generation, all keyboard shortcuts and accelerator keys. The lot.

On the other hand the visual appearance is awful. Instead of the native Ubuntu styles which I was expecting the windows are rendered as for an ancient classic Windows version from about 1993! The font for the menus and window caption bars is so small that I can barely read it, whereas within Templot the fonts are all too large and widely spaced, and don't fit on the tabs and buttons. In addition there are several rendering glitches and errors:

2_172303_530000000.png2_172303_530000000.png

Is this what other users are seeing? Or am I missing something in the settings? Does it look as bad on other flavours of Linux? Does it look as bad on a Mac? :(

I shall have to do something about this, making global changes to the fonts when running under Wine, although I doubt I can do much about the menus and caption bars.

But for those who simply won't tolerate Microsoft code on their system, this does appear to be the way to run Templot -- and it's all entirely free, including now Templot itself. :)

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

I didn't have any problem installing Wine under Ubuntu 11.04 nor when upgrading to 11.10 (64-bit versions). I don't get the ugly fonts you experienced, though some of the soft keys have corrupted legends as in your screenshot. Here's my screenshot, for comparison:

Incidentally, I previously reported occasional problems with Templot timber shoving data entry under Wine - it took unusually long (sometimes 30-60 seconds) for each line to be accepted, though if one was patient it didn't lock up. It wasn't more than a mild inconvenience. Recently though I upgraded my (relatively puny: i3@1.33GHz × 4) laptop's RAM from 4GB to 8GB, for unrelated reasons. Now the slow-data-entry-in-Templot issue seems to have gone away.... interesting. I'm not expert enough to profile the memory use to investigate further, but perhaps there's a Linux guru on Templot Club who can advise?

Thanks for being open-minded enough to try out Templot on Wine/Linux for yourself !

best regards
Graham

Hi All,
I am also running Templot under Ubuntu Linux, release 11.10, with latest patches. Wine simply opened the installer and installed Templot. Built a simple loop + bypass, pdf printer works, sketchpad works fine (!), saves, loads. Bless you Martin - another US$150.00 saved! Yes, I shall tithe a portion, as will most of us - ummmm... right lads?? :)

Martin,
Actually, the screen clip you attached didn't look too bad.  If you have updated your Ubuntu, it was suggested to delete the earlier versions first, also the Gnu graphics package.

The small/misfit font menu issue is known.  I understand that Canonical are working on something.  So it might be well to see what their global solution might be.  Your alternative is to install the M$ TruType faces 'Times New Roman', 'Courier New' (monospaced), and 'Arial' + 'Arial Bold'.  Just add the definition files to your Linux font directory.  The open software Linux faces aren't quite right for many Windoze applications. Surprize...

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for that.

The slight problem I have is that I've installed this on a stand-alone system without internet access. Hence the reason I'm stuck on 10.04LTS and can't seem to upgrade without Wine failing to install without errors. I don't want to connect this system because I keep it 100% clean for development work.

I may have a rethink and put Ubuntu on one of my other systems -- I wasn't really expecting it to work as well as it is. :)

regards,

Martin.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for your report. There is definitely an issue with the data-entry dialog. But in truth there is also an issue with this on Windows. That dialog is unchanged from the very first versions of Templot over 12 years ago and it's on the list for a complete re-write.

I've now done some work to replace the Windows fonts with the free Linux fonts when running under Wine, with a big improvement in appearance. There isn't anything I can do about the transparent caption bar on child windows, which seems to be bug in Wine. Nor the tiny font for the captions and the menus -- thanks Jeff for the news this may get fixed.

Changes in the next TDV update:

That would be fine for my system, but the object is to supply software which works for others! :)

Martin.

Ubuntu 11.10 user, no real problems, and I also don't have the small font problems etc, I run a dual boot with Windows, and all I do is run the Templot executable from the windows install, I do not do a separate install in Ubuntu.

Dear Martin,
Having been given an iMac for my 60th, 18 months ago, I only kept the PC going to run Templot (on v82). I happened across "CrossOver" on this forum two days ago, so I downloaded the free trial and was about to contact you for an unlocking key only to discover Templot2 is now free! So I downloaded that and 25 minutes later I was up and running. Not only does it run fine, without Bootcamp, Parallels, Ubuntu or Linux; but unlike other Windows programmes (such as the work ones I log into from home) it allows me to use all 27 inches of the screen.

Thank you very much from one very happy modeller. All the best - Andrew.
