If you use the Avast anti-virus program, be aware that serious problems are being reported following the latest update today. Many innocent files are being deleted by mistake. Don't delete files if Avast reports them infected -- wait for an update fix from Avast. More info at:

I'm quite relieved that I'm not using Avast myself, but I know that many folks do.

Had a similar problem with work's Symantec - where it happily deleted a load of VPN software :?

Do you mean today?

According to Avast it is now fixed, but they are obviously a bit shaken up. I'm relieved that I don't use Avast, but now worried that my anti-virus (Eset NOD32) might go the same way if Symantec AV is also playing up.

Hello,

Last night, Avast had a bad false positive issue. At around 12:15am GMT we released VPS update 091203-0 which started flagging hundreds of innocent files as a "Win32: Delf-MZG" Trojan. Among the files affected were high-profile programs produced by Adobe, Realtek sound card drivers, various media players etc.

We are still investigating the issue, trying to find out what exactly happened and how to make absolutely sure it will not happen again.

At 5:50am GMT, another VPS update (091203-1) was released, fixing the issue.
Those who have not used their computers between 12:15am and 5:50am will most likely not be affected.

If you're still using the bad VPS (091203-0) we recommend to invoke a VPS update immediately.

Our technical support team is currently preparing extensive HOW-TOs about how to fix the situation for those who were hit by the problem.

We will be updating you shortly.

We deeply apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

I see from the dsl forum mentioned above that:

"Then Avast announced that Explorer.exe was a trojan!

No comment :)

Thanks for the heads-up Martin! I use Avast and thought,"Uh Oh!" until I learnt that particular release has been replaced and my machine has not been used between 1am and 6am ( which night though? ) so I haven't had any false positive reports!

Is it really impossible to create an operating system that cannot be infected with viruses or otherwise screwed up????? Then we would not need AV software!

The cynics amongst us might suggest that the Ant Virus suppliers employ virus creators to keep them in business.
