Hi All

Well, I finally used Templot to lay out my new layout and have pretty much everything handled aside from 2 Y turnouts and a crossing. Now I know Templot can't handle big angle crossings, and thats fine, but I have read that Y turnouts are possible.

These are the 3 offending bits.....

The upper turnout needs to fit into the pace as indicated. Looking from the switchpoints, the RH track is a 25.5" radius, the LH track is 48.7" radius:

The next Y is the one on the right of the top image. It is a little more subtle, [From the switchpoint end] the RH track is 45.1" radius and the LH track is 274" radius.

And for reference, the layout on the town/yard side, so it all fits together :)

This has taken a couple of days but I am happy with it. I even followed Martins turntable videos to do the turntable. But I digress....

The whole point of this thread was to ask for advice. What would be the best way to start with my Y turnouts within the knowledge that I am a Templot minnow. Or, should I just forget the whole idea and just use the rails to build the turnouts once it is printed. Any suggestions welcome.

I am also attaching the box file for the layout in case anyone wants to have a nosy at at this minnows work...

That's looking great. :) Thanks for showing it and uploading the file.

I'm not sure why you are having trouble with Y-turnouts? It seems at first glance that all your Y-turnouts could be easily achieved with ordinary negative curving (contraflexure). You already have some such turnouts, such as the one leading to the turntable.

All you need to do is insert a turnout in whichever of the two roads of the Y is the main route, and then adjust it with F5 and F6 mouse actions until it matches the required diverging route. Be sure to change the V-crossing type to curviform.

Achieving a perfectly symmetrical split-deflection Y-turnout is a bit more tricky, but there is a tutorial about that at:

It's a bit out-of-date, and some of the methods have been made easier by later developments in Templot, but it should help you if you find an ordinary contraflexure turnout won't fit. More about the relevant recent changes at:

Hi Martin

Thanks for the comment, means alot coming from the master of Templot!
After reading your reply I tried "normal" turnouts in the main rails and it has worked out fine. The top turnout became a 3.5 curviform turnout and the lower one a 5.25 curviform. It meant reconfiguring the joining track but seems to have worked out fine. I was a bit concerned about such a sharp turnout from the interchange but when it became a Y-ish version I deemed it fine :)

I am now off to figure out timbering, especially around the turnouts. The straight stuff I am not too worried about, that will be just for reference as I have a jig for branchline track but those turnouts that are tightly clustered are a different story!
