I am considering purchasing Templot and I have a few questions.

Are there templates for American railroads? I model 2-rail 0 scale and am interested in #6 through #12 straight and curved switches.

Also I thought I read that templates can me modified and the exported as .DXF or .DWG files that can be used in Autocad, is this correct?

Thanks

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

First and foremost, in the UK and Templot a "switch" is only that part of a turnout which comprises the moving switch blades (points), not the whole turnout. Consequently it is meaningless in Templot to refer to a #6 switch -- this is a #6 turnout:

If you refer to a whole turnout as a switch in the American style you will get in a terrible muddle in Templot. :)

Templot can create any size or style of turnout, including American prototypes. Here for example is a screenshot showing some typical American turnout templates:

The Templot data file for these can be downloaded from:  http://www.templot.com/samples/usa_turnouts_h0.box

(Right-click and "Save Target/Link As...")

Those are #5 and #8 turnouts, but using the F5 mouse action in Templot they can be adjusted to #6 or #12 turnouts, or any other size. Likewise using the F6 mouse action they can be curved to any radius.

Here's a typical result of doing that. These are #7 and #9 turnouts:

They are currently in H0 Scale, but could be easily converted to 0 scale.

DXF export yes. More about DXF export at:

 http://www.templot.com/martweb/gs_dxf.htm

In the next Templot upgrade (free :)) you will also be able to export in PDF and EMF formats.

DWG export no, sorry.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Bruce,

I should have mentioned that the file above won't work properly in Templot version 074b, the timbering through the crossings will be wrong. To use the file you need to upgrade to version 091c of Templot:

Hi Martin

My question is sortof related to this topic so Ill just post it here instead of creating a new thread for it.

I have downloaded your samples above and they seem to work just fine after conversion to my scale (N scale)
I had no problems changing the frog angle to #12.

However when I want to make longer turnouts I presume I also need longer points.
From what I can gather 16'6" points are ok up to about #10 turnout. After that 19' points are used.

But I cannot seem to understand how I am to extend the points to 19' points, can you help me with instructions for that?

I am using Templot 0,91c.

Regards
/Leo

Template/switch options

then select your switch.

use of F5 should extend the switches automaticaly but you can overide that by the above.

Hi Alan

Thanks for the help, seems I forgot to respond and thank you last time.

Looking at the generic american templates above and comparing it to the number 8 turnout in the attached pdf.
Can anyone tell me how far from each other they are? As in what are the major differences?

Basically, will it be worth the hassle for me to try and recreate a number 8 turnout according to the attached pdf instead of handbuilding a switch according to the number 8 american template above.

Regards
/Leo

Hi Bruce,

I also model 2-rail 0 fine scale (both NMRA 1/4 inch and GOG 7mm to the foot) and can assure you that TEMPLOT works fine in this scale - actually I do not think that TEMPLOT really cares what scale it is working in.

I hope that this helps - it is an excellent program.
