I have scanned a prototype track plan into templot and have added the track templates.  Doing a print preview the layout would be over 14 feet in length in OO.  The space that I have available is 9 feet on its longest length.  I do not want to compromise on length because I want to run prototypically length trains so the easiest way to achieve this would be to "curve" the plan so that I can make it fit in a space 9 feet x 6 feet.  Is this possible?  I assume that I would just load the template plan without the background shape and then bend it somehow.  Grateful for any advice.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry to disappoint you, but this isn't possible. The trackwork on the inside of the bend would get crunched up to fit, and would no longer be prototypical and possibly not even buildable. Likewise on the outside of the bend the trackwork would all get stretched out, with similar results.

Templot would need to be massively more complex and intelligent to sort it all out by itself.

More about this subject in this topic:

Unless this is a very complex track plan, it shouldn't take you too long to re-align everything onto new curved centre-lines.

There is a video showing how to do that in this topic:

Hi Steve,

I know exactly where you are coming from - if you look at my proposals for Singleton I need something like 21' if I didn't curve it around.....

My solution was to draw a curve (represent a 15' radius in my case) and do a literal "cut and paste" of a print of the scanned prototype plan so that the 1' (linear) on the drawn curve = (25.4 x 12)/4 ' on the scanned plan. I then rescanned the "curved" version to use as the background shape.

A bit tedious, but it worked. If its any help, to make sure the whole thing flowed in TEMPLOT the first template I put down was a 15' radius curve through the station, and then worked everything from that - ie inserting turnouts, parallel lines etc.

Like you I did wonder if there was an "easy" way to curve things using photoshop, corel draw or something like that....

Hope this helps

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the idea. I will look at adding such a function to "curve" a picture shape in TDV. :)

It will be slow, or very slow, but you have to do it only once.

The image quality will be poor, or very poor, but adequate as a background guide -- similar to the existing twist functions.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Richard,

That worked out quite well. I have replied with the details in a previous topic on this same subject:

Many thanks for the idea. :thumb:
