Hi, I've exported a .dxf file to open in AutoCad so that I can draw up a design for machining a jig but when I open it in A/Cad nothing shows. Anyone have any idea why? Regards, GeoffB |

Have you zoomed out far enough? For example ZOOM EXTENTS or Z E.

Yep - zoomed both ways but nothing showing - I even tried exporting with the rail in yellow so that I could see it against the black background but nothing there. The file is opening in A/Cad as when I zoom in/out and then go to close the file I'm asked if I want to save the file.

Anyone have any idea why?Hi Geoff, Only background templates can be exported to DXF. Are you trying to export the control template? If so press the INSERT key to store it as a background template and then try again. If not, can you post the DXF file here as an attachment for me to test? Or if you don't want to do that, try opening the DXF file in Windows Notepad (it's actually a text file) and check some of the dimensions of the LINE elements. regards, Martin. |

Hi Geoff Hope you don't mind my intrusion. Opens OK in Autocad 2012 I just loaded it and double clicked the screen and et voila not just one but two RH turnouts one on top of the other. Cheers Godders |

Hi Godders, Not at all - thanks for looking at it. I'm running ACad2004. So, what am I doing wrong - all other dxf files I have from other drawings (non-Templot ones) open fine. All the layers show in the layers list - just nothing visible in the drawing area. Regards GeoffB |

At the risk of suggesting the obvious, have you checked that all the layers are turned on? Cheers Nigel |

Hi Geoff, You exported the DXF file in mm units. Most CAD programs of US origin default to inches, or some odd units such as furlongs or cubits. You need to set mm units in the DXF import dialog, or export from Templot in inches. Otherwise the template will be 25.4 times further from the grid origin than you expected, and may be difficult to find. Unfortunately old-style text-based DXF files do not contain any units information. It has to be set in the import dialog before importing. This is the DXF import dialog in TurboCad -- click Setup... (after setting DXF as the file type) on the Open File dialog to see it: 2_071122_170000000.png regards, Martin. |

Looks fine to me in AutoCAD 2014 - I'm afraid I don't have the older version, so I can't try it on that. Regards Richard. |

Hi Godders Thanks - that works fine - now I have it. I had forgotten about the Zoom A/E command as I rarely have to use it. Whilst I use ACad, I'm only use it a little now and then, so I'm not that familiar with it - I get by with what I want for drawings that I need and only learn something new when I need it. Many thanks for your help. Martin, Thanks too - the units are set as metric in my ACad as I use only metric for the CNC miller for which most drawings are done. Regards, (A happy) GeoffB |
