I've just ordered a DLP 3D printer and i'm going to try and produce some chairs and sleepers. I'm looking to purchase chair drawings or even full 3d cad drawings, preferably GWR 3 hole chairs to start off with. | ||

The REA chairs used by other companies had 3 or 4 holes. Are you looking for CAD drawings of the raw chair casting, or with screwheads and key in place? If the latter you need to specify the model scale and details of the model rail section. For example, most 0 gauge modellers use code 125 bullhead rail, even though the common prototype BS-95R bullhead rail scales to code 131. I've never understood why that is, but it does mean that the key-top dimensions have to be modified to fit, and also to allow for the greatly overscale web thickness in all model rail sections. Also the keys are tapered wedges which normally remain projecting from the chair on the side from which they were driven. So you also need to specify which side, and by how much they remain projecting. Very soon Templot will be able to generate some DXF files for 3D printing. There is no charge for them, but on the other hand nor is there any guarantee that they are correct or represent any particular prototype. In fact I can say now that they don't and won't, because the curves and fillet radii in the original castings have to be simplified to keep the drawing complexity and file size within reasonable limits. Here for example is an REA 3-hole S1 chair generated by Templot, for BS-95R rail in 7mm/ft scale (no such model rail actually exists): 2_280838_130000000.jpg  2_280838_490000000.png  Note that this is for vertical rail. Prototype rail is inclined at 1:20. Model chairs are not strong enough to maintain rail at 1:20 inclination through the various bends in pointwork. File attached below, in mm units. You will need to change the scale and modify the key and inner jaw dimensions to suit your rail. If you find it useful, do please post some pics of the results here. thanks Martin, p4 is the scale/gauge and code 75 is the rail (c&l). If 2 bolt were more prevalent then i can easily go down that route. | ||

i can honestly say i hate Solidworks, but i've persevered and got something rough drawn up. PS. the dlp printer has arrived (Photon) and the engineer in me has already looked at ways to improve (alter) it. |

3603_060813_540000000.jpg ok i have a working chair, it slides well on c&l code 75 bullhead rail and keeps the 1 in 20 cant. Unfortunately the resin i have is clear green so getting a good pic is quite hard. By eye the detail is great so i'll be ordering some black, brown or grey resin to get it clearer to view. Anyway here's the pic. |

Hi Tom, Have you considered printing timbers complete with chairs? I printed this as an experiment at Shapeways. That's too expensive for me but it might make sense on a home printer.
