The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Dislocated symbols!

Hi Martin

I thought it best to post here rather than clutter your main 2.27b thread. A more serious problem with symbols has appeared. As you can see from the screenshot, all the symbols on multiple templates have shifted down by about 145mm.

As far as I can remember, the sequence was to delete to control and add symbols to various templates in turn before copying to the background, which was all working fine. The last one I added was to template 45, then I hit Escape to close the symbols dialogue then Escape again to close the move locator dialogue. Then Insert to copy that template to the background. It was then (I think) I noticed that the other symbols had disappeared, although in fact they'd just dropped off the bottom of the visible window. However, I'm unable to reproduce this.

I immediately saved the box file (attached). When re-opening, copying any background template to control immediately puts ALL symbols back in the right place, but also moved the symbol from template 45 UP by about 145mm. Copying that template to the control puts its symbol back, but drops all the others again.

Edit:- in fact, copying any template to control that doesn't already have symbols shifts any existing symbols down, which means I can't actually carry on adding new symbols.

Sorry!
Paul

Hi Paul,

Well, that's odd. :(

But you don't have to be sorry.

227c here we come. :)

I found that doing make the control on some of your templates always puts the symbols back, and on others always shifts them down. Very strange.

Many thanks for the box file. I should be able to nail this, but at the moment it's got me baffled!

cheers,

Martin.

I too thought it was odd! There’s a mix of BH and FB rail, but all the work I’d done was just on the FB so I’m not sure if that’s actually relevant. It’s the fact that all the symbols move, not just those on one template, that seemed particularly odd! I’ve just tried normalising all the templates but that made no difference either.

I certainly can’t see any common factor in those that templates that move the symbols and those that don’t.

Hi Paul,

I think I've found the bug. (y)

Or at least fixing it has cured the immediate problem. I need to do some more testing before I'm happy to release it. Hopefully by tomorrow.

Thanks again for finding it.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Paul,

227c is now on the server. :)

I found the bug and fixed it. As far as I can see from testing it has cured the problem.

But I would be grateful if you could do some more testing on your files and report anything strange. Thanks.

(I also changed the dropper ID text to show above the rails and platforms.)

However, there is more to it than that. Because I found the very same bug exists in the code for the sketchboard track plan and in exported image files. It's been there since the beginning of time, and as far as I know it has never caused any problems at all. I am obviously missing something, which could take me a long time to sort out. I didn't want to keep you waiting to get on with your planning, so I have released 227c with all that still as-is.

There is also a known issue with the exported image files -- if the control template is wanted instead of the background templates, the symbols are currently missing from it. That's just because I forgot to do that bit. Sorry about that. I will get it done for 227d.

Many thanks again for finding and reporting this.

cheers,

Martin.

Thanks Martin!

All installed and so far so good, but I'll let you know if there are any more problems (other than those you mentioned!) I'll have a more intensive try later - at the moment I'm physically bolting circuit boards to base boards!

Exporting image files is not something I do very often. I also tend not to use the Sketchboard, although your hint elsewhere about using it for wiring diagrams to link with droppers intrigued me!

Cheers,
Paul
