TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Out of memory saving shape file

I am trying to save a shape loaded from a .bgs file that is 94,567 Kb that I loaded about half an hour before trying to save it. The same installation saved the bgs file one day ago. Immediately before loading that bgs file I downloaded a map from the National Library of Scotland and saved that to a bgs file that is 152,467 Kb. Windows task manager says I have 1.5Gb of free memory (the real stuff, not swap) and apart from task and file manglers, Templot is the only thing running. It doesn't even pause before complaining, I click OK to the file name and bam, Out of Memory. I have saved it at least twice before as it is the main shape I am working with.

Hi Richard,

The size of the file is largely irrelevant. The critical factor is the size of a picture shape image in dots (pixels), see for example:

https://85a.uk/templot/club/index.php?threads/tynemouth-station-from-nls-maps.667/post-6586

You can see the image size on the background shapes dialog if you select it in the list:

If you obtained this map as a single large scan, try splitting it into smaller sections, using the crop/combine function, more info at:

The thing I don't understand is that Templot has loaded it: when dragging and dropping a .jpg file to load it; then saved it to a bgs file; and, at least once, imported then saved that (because I shifted it). Suddenly Templot doesn't like it. I have originally cropped it as much as possible in Gimp and did not re-align it when in Templot, because I don't mind working North to South. It's now covered in templates and I don't want to move it. I did try dividing into two but that had the expected result, not enough memory when saving (because two halves make a whole). I deleted one half and successfully saved the other but after deleting that it will not load the original full image.

It's clearly acquired a nasty habit as the first time I tried to save the templates it failed with the memory error, but second time it saved them.

Hi Richard,

Please can you post a screenshot of the actual out of memory message?

What is the image size in dots (pixels)? This is the detail which matters, the file size is largely irrelevant. Two halves do not make a whole because each bitmap is processed separately.

Where did you get the image file from?

Ensure that it is a 24-bit image, select it in the list and click this:
