TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

A new Templot program update is now available. Version 244c.

Your copy of Templot should update automatically if you restart it and follow the instructions. There is no need to uninstall your existing copy of Templot.

If you are still using Templot version 227a , the automatic update will fail due to a program glitch.
Sorry about that -- please download and install version 244c manually from:
https://85a.uk/templot/companion/manual_update.php

Changes in 244c:

1. track planning: By toggling the keyboard Scroll-Lock key ON, you can prevent a background template being selected when clicked on. This is useful when working with multiple overlaid partial templates.

index.php

Templates can still be selected in the usual way by Shift+click or Caps-Lock+click on their name labels.

2. 3D plug track:

A new tick-box. Ticked by default:

index.php

If ticked, any timber flanges or webs which conflict with any sockets on adjacent templates and would obstruct them, will be automatically removed from the output file. This will be a time saver when creating timbering bricks for complex formations. It is not relevant for single turnout templates.

This function removes the entire web or flange, rather than just the offending part of it. Which means that some timbers may end up attached to the webs at one end only -- it would be worth running a splint or two under the timbers between the sockets to restore the integrity of the brick.

Note that although the offending flanges and webs will be removed from the 3D output, they will still show on the trackpad screen.

3. bugs fixed:

There was bug in 244a when using the mouse actions for timber shoving, while experimental chairing was in force. Now fixed.

Omitting the TS rail from plain track templates was not working properly. Now fixed.

Please let me know if you spot anything wrong in 244c.

cheers,

Martin.
