TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Branch Track

Could someone please tell me how I curve the branch track so that when I add a strait peace of track at the end it will be parallel to the strait piece of track below it. In Capture 2 jpeg I used the curve tool to curve the track so that the last sleeper was square with no jagged edges. Is that the correct way to do it or is there an easier way of doing it. Thanks.

Having inserted the turnout into your plan use the tools->Make return curve option.

Hi Rob thanks for your reply. Your suggestion only works if you want to make a section of track parallel to the branch track on the control template. I want to make the return curve parallel to another piece of track that isn't the control template.

Hi Tom,

Make the parallel track which you want to link to first. tools > make double-track.

Then make branch track from the turnout. Then create a simple link to connect it to the parallel track.

How to do that is here:

cheers,

Martin.
Thanks Martin that was a great help. What an amazing piece of software to be able to work out how long the return curve needs to be. I presume the return curve is a constant radius right up to the top of the curve at the 12 o'clock mark.

Hi Thomas,

For a simple link, yes it is.

However, if you tighten the radius a fraction and bend the curve down away from the straight track a little, you would be able to insert a transition link between them for smoother running. The further you bend it away, the longer will be the transition zone.

More about inserting a transition link at:

Martin.

Quite often you have to change the piece of track which is the control template, which is both quick and easy to do.

I guess those of us who use Templot regularly we just take this action as granted and fail to explain the process clearly to others, or assume others realise this action needs to be done
