TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

I dont know if this is the right thread, but this is the link that I managed to download 3D Builder after it would not load from Microsoft's site

Its a software site called Filehorse, be careful as there are lots of adverts that pop up and you have to concentrate you are loading the program you want. But it got me the program

https://www.filehorse.com/download-3d-builder/download/

I am thinking my issue was Microsoft wants this software on modern more powerful machines and its own software blocks the download

Hi John,

i don't know anything about that web site.

The official download link from Microsoft is:

https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/3d-builder/9WZDNCRFJ3T6?hl=en-gb&gl=US

When you click that on my computer you see this:

get_3d_builder.png

And when you click Install, it downloads and installs 3D Builder.

i don't know why your computer would be any different. however, i long ago gave up expecting anyone else's Windows computer to work the same way as mine.

You can avoid seeing most misleading rubbish advertising by using Firefox as your browser and setting tracking protection to Strict.

p,s. the above link is available direct from within Templot.

i will move these posts to a more suitable topic shortly.

cheers,

martin.

As we chatted about whilst trying to get me going my issues started with the first of two very large updates, Initially my computer would not down load 3D builder, then after the update it disabled Cura. One of my best friends had his email severely disrupted by that update, resulting in his service provider having to reset several parts of the email software, then whilst chatting to another friend her fathers email was also affected resulting in her husband having to reinstall his version of Windows into his elderly computer. Probably a bit like the phone companies slowing down old phones supposedly to save battery life

This third party site led me to the same site, but it worked on my old machine. It may well be two different issues and just a coincidence

Given my new computer with windows 11 installed both programs in a flash over the same internet connection I am beginning to think the system only allows certain sized programs on older machines. I may be totally wrong but one of the sales staff said I needed more RAM than I have on my older machine. I never known an update causing so many issues

hi John,

can you clarify that your problems getting 3D Builder were only on your old computer?

and that your brand new Windows11 computer either

a) had 3D Builder already installed?

or

b) installed 3D Builder from the Microsoft store with no problems?

cheers,

Martin.

As I said on my new computer I had no issues, but with 3D builder it seemed I was not alone in gaining access. I assume it also affect other programs, otherwise these types of sites would not bee needed. And loads of self help posts and tutorials about issues with Windows

I think Windows operating systems need more and more RAM to work as further updates are applied, and as I said two of my friends had their email operating systems affected by the same update

I was told Windows 11 now needs 4k of ram, yet they are selling machines with only 4K of ram with Windows 11, but with a cavate that they are for light use only (emails, internet etc)

I guess when you try to access the program direct Microsoft for additional programs. they look for a certain amount of space/power, going via a third party gets around this. But when using these free services they are paid for by adverts, so just take your time not to download something else

As I said on my old computer 3D builder is working fine now with this download.

I am pleased I am not the only one who has had this problem. I have spent this afternoon trying to download 3D Builder and in the end gave up. When I click “Install” from the MS App site the little whirly thing goes round and round with a message underneath saying “Pending”. I have a fairly new Windows 11 PC that seems to cope with everything I ask of it. After several attempts I came to the conclusion there must be a problem at the MS end. I will have another try tomorrow.

Les

Good to have you on board, I was having the same issues, I think the MS site looks for minimum requirements and refuses to run on older machines

I had 2 or 3 goes at the site I posted, mostly as I tend to push buttons too quickly and adds pop up as you try to click on. Once I pressed the correct buttons it downloaded very quickly

Wait for all the adverts to load then make your selection !!!!

Following on with more progress today. I went back to the MS App Store clicked on 3D Builder and it took me straight in to 3D Builder. No loading or anything. So, then I went back into Templot and accessed 3D Builder from within Templot. No problems at all. I don’t know whether the problem I had yesterday was an App Store issue or mine. But who cares, it worked today.
