Downloading Templot

With my new HP laptop I reread all your marvellous articles and went to download. Of course it complained but nothing like you have on your list or I've seen before, giving me no option to not ignore. The file is described as CRDOWNLOAD file, and suggests opening with Note pad, Windows viewer or Word, all completely inappropriate! It also then asks that I choose and App!

Any ideas?

Hi Brian,
I have an HP laptop.

I have just gone to the Templot download page & scrolled down to get:-

1698086066845.png

When I clicked on the green "download Templot" button it down loaded a file called templot_241e_setup.exe

Here is a screen print showing that file in downloads folder:-

My windows recognises it as a .exe file.

Is that where you attempted the download from?

Hi Brian,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

Is your laptop a Windows computer?

Has Steve's post helped you to download the Templot setup file?

When you try to run (open) the downloaded file (double-click on it) you might see this:

download_button1.png

Don't click OK.

Click instead where it says More info

You will then see this:

download_button2.png

Click Run anyway. Templot is safe to use and won't harm your computer.

Follow the instructions as they appear to install Templot on your computer.

cheers,

Martin.

Thanks everyone. I don't get that far. It shows a programme name and doesn't seem to recognise the programme type. I am using chrome so ill try another browser.

If you’re seeing an apparent file type of crdownload, that implies that either you didn’t let it finish downloading or your antivirus software is “locking” the file whilst it works out what it is. If you have any third party AV software, turn it off (better, remove it completely). Windows Defender does a fine job but does occasionally hang onto a download for a bit.

This is as far as I get! You will notice I've been playing and it can be seen when my computer doesn't say no! Just wondering if a thing called 'Microsoft Defender' gets in the way. Not that I know much about these things but I cant see any way of disabling it.

Ah, ok! If you hover over where it says ‘isn’t commonly downloaded” you’ll see three dots appear - click on them. One of the options is ‘Keep’ - click that. You should then see a windows that asks if you trust it, with the only apparent options being Delete or Cancel, but you should also see a down arrow next to ‘Show more’ - click that, then ‘Keep anyway’. The .crdownload file should now change to a .exe file, and off you go!

Somewhere on this forum I’ve put a post with lots of screenshots - I’m typing this quickly on my iPad so I can see what Edge is doing on my PC!

(Defender doesn’t get in the way, but it will quietly check what’s going on.)

Hope this helps,
Paul

I presume this is Defender. I got to here (as attachment), said I though it was safe but it still wouldn't let me in!
I also show that I dont seem to have all the options you talk of. No show more.
I'm all into delayed gratification but I need a drink!!
Many thanks B

Did you click 'Keep' where shown on your second screenshot - that's the first step. The window with 'Show more' should then appear. I've been trying to find my previous post with all the screenshots but without luck so far.

Edit - found it: Microsoft Edge woes It's a couple of years old but the gist is still correct.

Don't bother doing the 'Report site as safe' bit - Microsoft apparently do absolutely nothing with that!

We are getting there, sort of! I have an icon that I can open but then I'm told It is not an approved App with no option but to alter my App recommendations. Upon clicking this I get the next view which leaves me with no idea whatsoever as to what recommendations might need to be changed!
Thanks

Hi Brian, Paul,

I can hardly believe all this. How can it possibly be such an obstacle course? I have none of this (using Firefox on Windows11).

Brian, try this. Where you can see the file templot_241e_setup in your Downloads, click on it with the right mouse button, and then click Run as administrator. It should then install.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Brian

We're definitely getting there! The screenshot you have is one I'd forgotten about. Hopefully if you click where it says 'Change my app recommendation settings' you'll see something like the screenshot below:-

apprecc.PNG

In the top box where mine is set to 'Anywhere', yours probably says 'The Microsoft Store only'. Change that to 'Anywhere'. This is global setting and as the name suggests it means Windows will allow you to install anything you like*

When you change that setting, try running the Templot .exe file again. You may then see the blue screenshot that Martin posted above - work your way through that and you should have Templot up and running. The good news is that once you have Templot installed, you never have to go through this again as any updates can be done from within Templot.

Cheers.
Paul

* which means the onus is on you not to try to install some dodgy software, although Windows Defender will kick in if it finds anything it doesn't like.

Because that's how Microsoft want it to be. Personally, I use Chrome if I want to download Templot but Brian had problems with that. I will no longer touch Firefox with a bargepole.

Incidentally, Edge is based on Chrome so both show a .crdownload extension.

Also incidentally, Brian now actually has the Templot executable which he didn't have before so he now has something to right-click on.

Hi Paul,

They are getting as bad as Apple in thinking they still own the computer after they have sold it to you.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Martin,

Looking back at the 2021 topic where I previously explained how to download Templot using Edge, I made the same point - "where Apple leads, Microsoft follows". My Mac is getting on a bit, and after one update I was told after the event that a particular program had been summarily deleted because it wasn't compatible!

I do feel that the download instructions could be linked to on the website though. Someone buying a brand new computer with Windows will have Edge, and despite appearances the steps are not that hard to follow when explained - the tricky bit was the work I did in 2021 to work out the steps! The new bit was now having to tell Windows to let you install your own "apps".

Cheers,
Paul

Thank you all for your time. Interesting point about onus. Bit of the nanny state/ compensation culture thing that tries to stop you from messing up. It also takes away the fun, and you're talking to an aging biker here.
wish me luck.

Hi
you will notice that on my screen 4 the heading says Apps>installed Apps. there seems to be nowhere else to look, only those that are already there. I found a 'help' on installing but was overwhelmed, particularly with the wording 'only install trusted apps'! So I've done a lot of reading and got nowhere. I know I'm not good at this but this is silly. I'm not giving up but my wife has had enough of me spending much of the afternoon doing this!! It will happen as i refuse to buy peco etc, even if they now do EM.
Thanks for all your time.

clickHi Martin,
When I tried replicating Brian's problem in Microsoft Edge, the right click on that screen does not give an option "Run as adminstrator".

First step:-
1698168080249.png

The right click gives the menu displayed.
Click "keep" and I get;-
1698168199640.png

Clicking on the "show more " down arrow gives:-
1698168304755.png

Clicking on "Keep anyway" then has the download list with the file showing as .exe and an option "open file" and clicking on that gives:-
1698168442177.png

clicking on more info gives:-
1698168480110.png

Clicking on "Run anyway" then leads you to the "Do you want to allow this app.. etc" choose [yes] to get to the real start:-

Hope this helps ....
It will be worth it in the end....

Hi Martin,

Thanks for posting the above - that matches my home PC and is a different route to the same settings on my work PC! (Templot isn't installed on the work one.)

I think in summary we have the file downloaded, now the problem is getting Windows to allow Brian to install a program that isn't from the Microsoft Store. It really shouldn't be such a fight, but this problem is only going to get worse over time. If this doesn't work, and "Run as administrator" doesn't work, I'm totally stumped.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I think the starting point should always be "don't use any Microsoft software", including Microsoft Edge, Word, Office, etc. Firefox is just so much easier, and is great at blocking tracking scripts and general internet rubbish.

Until now I've made a point of never using any Microsoft software, and I'm a bit miffed that we need to use 3D Builder for the mesh-fixing. Needless to say, that doesn't work as I'd like from within Templot, unlike the non-Microsoft 3D-Tool preview which is great.

cheers,

Martin.

Unfortunately you need Microsoft Windows to run Templot, regardless of how it’s downloaded, and the current sticking point is getting Windows to allow Templot to be installed!

Hi Paul,

Yes, but the underlying Widows API which Templot uses hasn't changed in years, thank goodness. Templot is still being compiled on Delphi5 from 1998, and it still runs great on Windows11. Long may it continue, because I don't know what I would do if it didn't. Possibly Microsoft can't change it because the original developers have long since moved on, and forgot to leave a note about how it works. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Paul,

Just tried in Opera. Same thing -- downloaded and went straight to the Open button, and installed without blinking.

Tried again with a fresh downloaded .exe installer which I haven't previously downloaded or installed on this computer -- LibreCAD.

Same thing -- straight through in Opera and installed without a blink.

p.s. It's the 2D CAD which James recommends on his Bexhill West video channel. Looks good. :)

Hi Brian, I was wondering how you were getting on. No, it's not just you! It's Microsoft making it increasingly hard for people to install software that Microsoft doesn't approve.

Hi All
I've been off grid with various issues, life in general, but I'm now have Templot. Despite the lack of reasonable assistance from HP and Currys (chocolate fire guard comes to mind) we (my wife!) sorted it. It seems that Microsoft Defender has an 'S Mode', which you have to leave, and once left you can't return!! All this with dire warnings that you are now at risk. Anyway, thank you all so much for everyone's enthusiastic assistance. I've now watched so many tutorials and now the hard work, and fun, begins.
Thanks again
Brian

Hi Brian,

I’m glad you’re sorted. I must admit that S mode is a new one on me, and having now looked it up I can see why you had problems.

Yet another difficulty to be aware of when installing Templot! Unfortunately, these difficulties are outside of Martin’s control but at least now we’re one step ahead again. Until Microsoft move the goalposts again…

By the way, you’re not really “at risk” because Defender is still protecting you. It sounds like Microsoft’s way of saying “we want control so we’re going to scare you into giving it to us.” Maybe that’s just me being cynical!

Cheers,
Paul
