TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

I've just decided to give this a go. I've down loaded the 3D Builder programme but Templot insist on opening CURA. I can't see an obvious place to change that so any help please?

regards

Hmmm, Martin will be able to advise better on this, but for now try opening 3d Builder first and then importing the .stl file directly from the Templot folder STL_FILES_RAW. This should achieve the same result.
Or, right-click on the file in the STL_FILES_RAW folder and use 'open with...'.

I'm sure this issue has been raised before but for now I can't remember the fix.

Let us know how you get on.

If you go down that route, 3D Builder will not automatically save the mesh-fixed .STL in the folder named STL_FILES_FIXED, but that needn't matter as you can do that yourself, or save it anywhere for that matter ready for slicing in your preferred slicer.

Yes I did open the STL file by importing into 3D Builder. What I don't want to happen is for the default for STL files to be 3D Builder as I have other programmes that produce STL files that I want them to use CURA.

Not happy. I spend 20 minutes preparing an answer to your first question, and then you change the question.

Martin.

Alan, to set your preferred program defaults, click Windows Start > Settings > Apps. You'll be able to set your default app for .stl's to whatever works best for you.

Thanks for that James. I've actually managed to print some Track Panels! These are for S7.

I've played around with the settings and managed to reduce the print time from 3.6 Hrs to a little over 1 hr.

What I've also done is produce some plugs that simply have a round nib on top which fits into the base of an ExactoScale chair.

This saves me having to print on my resin printer (which I don't actually like to do - very messy) and I can use my store of 4-bolt chairs.

Here is a picture so far:
