TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Incorrect Spacing at Rail Ends - what am I doing wrong?

Hi all,

As an example, if I start with a curved template which then connects to a straight template, then subsequently convert the curved template to a turnout and then roam this to the position I want then this affects the sleeper spacing at the joint between the (now) turnout template and the straight template.

In a similar vein, if I have a transition curve (90 degrees, straight to 1000mm, for example) then mirror this on the peg so that the curve then transitions back to straight again I usually find that the sleeper spacing at the joint between the two templates is all wrong (too wide, too narrow, sleepers overlapping etc.).

I'm obviously doing something wrong, but what is it please?

Many thanks
Brian

Hi Brian,

You are not doing anything wrong. What you do is first to finish and finalize the geometrical track planning. (The same applies to timber shoving.)

Then you go over your plan using the roll rails to match function, on each template in turn, to get the sleeper spacings to flow across the template boundaries.

See this old topic: https://85a.uk/templot/archive/topics/topic_2225.php

Here are the 2 images missing from that topic, resurrected from a backup drive:

cheers,

Martin.
